Every year, thousands of young adults leave home to go to university. Some are lucky enough to find places in student halls of residence and others move into shared houses. Either way, they need to think about insuring their possessions.
Some Home Contents Insurance policies include insurance for students' belongings while they are away at university, and others can add it onto your policy as an extra. It is very important to check this, especially as most students now go away with mobile phones, laptops, mp3 players, etc, which are all expensive to replace.
If your insurance doesn't cover this, then you will need to get specialist student belongings insurance. These will generally be for a lower total sum insured than household insurance policies, and are pretty reasonable in terms of cost.
Something you need to check on the insurance policies is whether the items are insured for accidental damage, and whether they are insured away from the student's accommodation. Both of these are important as it is so easy to accidentally drop an electrical item and break it, or to have something stolen or to lose it when not at home.
Of course, any contents insurance is optional but it is certainly worth getting as it could save a lot of money and hassle in the long run, and students have enough stresses to deal with, without adding having to replace a lost, stolen or broken laptop to the list.
